Green Construction
Romano Associates provides technical assistance in the use of Flyash for development of concrete mix
design, and are consultants in sustainable engineering practices.
At Romano Associates we are committed to sustainable development. We represent certified Leadership in Energy and Environmental
Design (LEED) companies who share our pledge to continued development and use of energy efficient construction materials. LEED is an
international system of certification, measuring the performance of energy usage, water consumption, reduction of carbon dioxide emissions,
and overall improvement of outdoor environmental quality. Use of flyash qualifies for credit in the LEED rating system, a standard developed
by the U.S. Green Building Council.
U.S. Department of Energy has documented the many environmental and economic benefits recognized
with increased utilization of coal combustion by-products. The use of flyash in the production of concrete
results in dramatic reductions in energy consumption, carbon dioxide emissions and the amount of solid
waste stored in landfills.
Coal Combustion Products Partnership (C2P2), is a cooperative program formed between the
Environmental Protection Agency and the Coal Combustion Products Industry to promote beneficial use
of coal combustion products and the resulting environmental benefits. C2P2 is looking for a 50% increase
in flyash used for the production of concrete by the year 2011. Although difficult to track progress, an
increase of over 20% has been seen in just the past three years. C2P2 also hopes to dramatically reduce
greenhouse gas emissions produced during the production of concrete by the year 2011.
American Coal Ash Association (ACAA) promotes advances in the environmentally sound and
commercially competitive use of Coal Combustion Products. A 2006 study by the ACAA revealed less
than half of the more than 70 million tons of flyash produced annually was being beneficially reused, and
of that reuse, only 59% was used in concrete applications. Many organizations have cooperated in
extensive research and testing to promote increased use of flyash in cement production. The results of
their studies confirm the strength and quality of fly ash concrete.
Romano Associates have contributed to the dramatic increase in beneficial reuse of coal combustion products over the last decade.
Our extensive involvement in government and technical organizations like the American Coal Ash Association keeps us at the forefront
of policy change and government incentives. We continue to develop and support new technologies for coal combustion product reuse,
while promoting solutions to environmental challenges.
