Coal Combustion Flyash is the mineral ash produced from burning coal. Flyash offers both environmental
and performance advantages in the production of concrete. Flyash is composed of silica, which when
combined with water at normal temperatures, reacts with calcium hydroxide to produce a cementitious
compound; a glue. This characteristic makes flyash a beneficial substitute for part of the Portland Cement
needed in the production of concrete.
Flyash is comprised of round, microscopic particles that function like ball bearings in the cement, improving
circulation and enhancing lubrication. Cement combined with flyash requires less water to make concrete;
reducing shrinkage. With flyash, concrete becomes easier to pour and can be pumped longer distances.
Tiny flyash particles improve cohesiveness, filling small pockets in the cement, enhancing consistency
and filling forms more completely. Concrete with flyash in the mix design is less permeable, increasing
durability and chemical resistance.
Bottom Ash is another by-product of the coal combustion process. These are the large unburned,
fire-resistant particles of coal that drop to the bottom of the furnace. Bottom Ash particles can be
ground up and used as aggregates in road construction projects, concrete block, structural fill, drainage,
backfilling and flowable fill applications.
Advantages of Flyash in Concrete Production:
• Easier to work with and use in cold weather
• Can be formulated to produce various set times
• Increased life cycle
• Denser, more durable with increased strength gain over time
